Due to an increasing aging population in the world and the changes in lifestyle, there is a substantial number of people with chronic diseases. They require homecare and long-term care services. In Hong Kong, there are about 700,000 diabetics. However, only approximately 400,000 patients are identified. Uncontrolled diabetes is devastating as it will lead to cardiovascular complications and kidney problems. Besides, the number of children who have diabetes has increased 10 times in the past 10 years. Effective blood glucose level management is crucial for keeping patients healthy and avoiding the occurrence of other chronic diseases. There is an urgent need to screen patients and detect diabetes or pre-diabetes before symptoms develop. Self monitoring blood glucose is highly recommended to diabetics. Currently, invasive blood glucose measurement is used which creates a psychological barrier to the public to test blood glucose periodically. In this project, we aim at studying the feasibility and building of an embedded optical system using off-the-shelf components for non-invasive blood glucose screening. The system can be easily used to measure blood glucose instantly and non-invasively. Hence, it can be used for screening of pre-diabeters and frequent blood glucose measuement.
