Deliverable:
There will be four deliverables in this project. They are listed as follows:
• Hardware
A next generation MID built specifically for the innovative MMI. This hardware platform consists of components not present in the first generation MID, including touch sensors, higher resolution camera, a more powerful CPU for computation and analysis, etc.
• Software
Sensor algorithms, including those of motion sensor, visual sensor and touch sensor, developed on the second generation MID platform.
• User group & market studies
A user group study will be conducted on the younger generations of mobile device users to collect their feedbacks on MMI; another market study will be conducted to analyze products in the market related to our MMI, in terms of functions and user experience.
• Patent applications
Two MMI-related patents will be filed in this project to protect our intellectual properties.
Description:
It is the objective of this project to explore non-traditional Man-Machine Interface (MMI) for mobile devices. Due to its natural limitations: small display and alphanumeric keypad, and lack of a keyboard, traditional mobile device MMI is quite limited in terms of user experience. This project would focus on external display and sensor-based input technologies to move the mobile MMI into a new generation. The goal of these innovative MMI is to offer competitive edges to next generation mobile device vendors, such that their products would appeal to the younger or tech-savvy user groups.
